With heartfelt and sincere sympathy, we announce the passing of Mrs. Debbie Bentley, age 64 of Thomson, who entered into rest at the University Hospital in Thomson, Georgia. The Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at 12 noon at the New Zion A.M.E. Church Cemetery. Viewing will begin on Monday from 12 noon to 6 pm at the funeral home.
Debbie was born on Governeurs Island, New York City, New York to the late Joseph Sr. and Ulie Fergus on October 6, 1956. As a child, Debbie was very protective of her brothers and sisters, and she traveled the world following her father who was in the Army, living in Virginia, Colorado, and France. Debbie was a 1975 graduate of Evander Childs High School in New York City, NY. After high school, she enlisted in the United States Army, where she served for 4 years. On July 25, 1979, she was wed in holy matrimony to William Bentley, Jr. at the United States Embassy in Seoul, South Korea, where the two were enlisted together. Debbie believed in education, so in 2005, she graduated from Augusta Technical College as a Microcomputer Specialist. In February 2020, she retired from the Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Hospital in Augusta, Georgia after 13 years of service. Debbie was a lifelong fan of James Brown and the Jackson 5 and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing cards, dancing and cooking.
Debbie is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Sr. and Ulie Fergus.
She leaves to mourn her loving husband of forty-one years, William Bentley Jr., three children, Joseph Bentley, of Thomson, Georgia & William (Cheryl) Bentley, of Norwood, Georgia, and Kasha Bentley, of Augusta, Georgia; six grandchildren, Cameron Bentley, of Thomson, Georgia &, Kariona Hurley, Kylah Hurley, Kennedi Hurley, Ace Johnson, and Khelani Johnson, all of Augusta, Georgia; one sister, Diana Wilson of Augusta, Georgia; four brothers, Dave (Rida) Fergus of Thomson, Georgia, Cedric (Lisa) Fergus and Blane Fergus, and Joseph Fergus Jr, all of New York City, New York; one brother-in-law, Jackie Bentley of Thomson, Georgia; a special friend, Dorothy Lott, of Warrenton, Georgia, and a host of loving nieces and nephews. The Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at 12 noon at the New Zion A.M.E. Church Cemetery. Viewing will begin on Monday from 12 noon to 6 pm at the funeral home.
