With sadness, heartfelt and sincere sympathy, we announce the passing of Mrs. Essie Mae Cummings-Shanks of Appling, Georgia, who entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at the Doctors Hospital. The Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 12 noon at the First Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Appling, Georgia. The Interment will follow in the First Mt. Carmel Memorial Gardens. The Viewings will begin on Friday, August 25, 2023 from 10 am to 12 noon at the funeral home and then from 2 pm to 6 pm at the First Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories; two daughters, Sara Ann Shanks and Dorothy Lee Shanks of Appling, GA; three sons, Lloyd Shanks Jr., Joseph Shanks Sr., both of Appling, GA and Gregory (Della) Shanks of Augusta, GA; seven grandchildren, Tonya (Tyree Sr.) McCladdie of Grovetown, GA, Tequilla (Tony) Shanks of Hephzibah, GA, TiaJuana Burns of Augusta, GA, Lacresha Bessix of Augusta, GA, William (Sharel) Burns of Appling, GA, Joseph (Michelle) Shanks Jr. of Augusta, GA, and Nigel Shanks of Appling, GA; fourteen great- grandchildren, Tyanna (Dominique) McCladdie, Tyree McCladdie Jr., Shanel, Shaniya, Shamir and Shaquille Burns, Kadyn and Khylee Shanks, Messiah Bessix, Noah Banner, Latyasia Burns, Jaheim, Jernasia, and Jaliyah Thomas; two brothers, Harold Cummings Sr. and Walter Cummings Sr.; three godchildren, Sherri Darden, Latoya Johnson, and Freddie (Shannin) Jones; one sister-in-law Pauline Cummings of Appling, GA; three aunts, Lueriel Ramsey Willingham and Mary Willingham, both of Appling, GA and Bertha Powell of Baltimore, MD; a devoted cousin Geneva Conley of Augusta, GA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
